Here's a quick and easy tip to save money and feed your family a healthier breakfast...
Next time you make a batch of pancakes or waffles, make extra. Put them in a zip-top bag, squeeze out as much air as you can, and pop them in the freezer. Instead of buying frozen waffles and pancakes, use your own frozen ones. You can pop them right into the toaster while still frozen, just like the supermarket version, except they taste a whole lot better and you can control the ingredients! It's also much cheaper.
Want it even healthier? Buy real maple syrup. The real stuff actually has a few vitamins and minerals in it that our body needs while the fake stuff is mostly corn syrup, artificial maple flavor, and caramel coloring. If you're going to put that much sugar into your body, shouldn't you get something out of it?
Want it even healthier, still? Substitute up to half of the flour in your favorite pancake or waffle recipe with whole-wheat flour. If you're looking to increase fiber, add a teaspoon of ground flax meal. I guarantee that even kids won't know they're eating something whole grain and healthy.
Enjoy!
