Recipe: Donut Sundae

Okay... I've been holding onto this blog post idea for awhile now and I just haven't taken the time to go out and buy all the ingredients to do the photos to go with it.  Since I really want to share it, I'm going to just go with some "borrowed" photos from the Internet and ask you to use a little imagination.  :-)

My Mom will tell you she doesn't enjoy cooking, but that doesn't mean I don't have my share of "recipes Mom used to make" that I too return to from time to time.  The fact is, the things we grow-up eating become a part of us, gourmet or not, and bring back fond memories.  I'm not exactly sure where Mom got the idea for the Donut Sundae, but I'm sure as heck glad she did.  Here goes...

Get yourself a plain boxed cake donut--you know, the ones that are usually leftover in the box after everyone has eaten the powdered sugar and cinnamon (or chocolate) ones?  Like these...

Of course, if you don't want to feel obligated to eat all of the other donuts in the box, your local donut shop should carry plain cake donuts that you can order one at a time.

Split the donut in half across the center so that you have two halves like a bagel.  Pop each side into a the toaster and toast as you would ordinary toast or a bagel.  Incidentally, this is a fine way to eat one of these donuts straight-up.  When it pops-up, just add some butter and enjoy.  However, I digress...

Once the donut pops-up, put each half into the bottom of a cereal bowl, cut-side up (this recipe makes two...I forgot to mention that).  Get yourself some quality vanilla ice cream, like this:

...and put a scoop or two on top of the warm donut.  You'll need to be working fast now because the heat from the donut will start melting the ice cream.  Next, you're going to add a chocolate sauce.  My favorite would be this one:

(That must have been a photo of an antique can cause it looks kind of cruddy...but bear with me.)

After the chocolate sauce, top it with some spray-can whipped cream and a maraschino cherry and enjoy.

Trust me when I say this is a close runner-up to the brownie sundae.  You'll never look at a plain cake donut the same way again.
